Cross Bores - New Mapping Tools and Technology for Prevention
A cross bore happens when an underground utility intersects an already existing underground asset. This leads to the compromise of either one or both of the assets, and it can have very damaging consequences.
Cross bores occur when trenchless technologies are used, such as directional drilling. With the increased use of this method of installing new underground utility lines, particularly in urban areas, there is now an increased risk of cross bores, compounded by the fact that many urban areas have complex networks of utilities. Not only can these cross bores be disruptive in maintaining normal utility operations, but in some cases can be very dangerous, even leading to potential explosions.
So how is a cross bore such a big problem, and how can this be effectively prevented? Let’s find out.
Cross Bores and Hidden Consequences
Cross bores may not pose an immediate problem. Many cases of cross boring can lay dormant for months or even years without any knowledge of it, much less their exact location.
Picture this. A gas pipeline crosses a sewer pipe. Then a plumber, without knowing that there is a cross bore, strikes the gas line while cutting through a sewer blockage. Natural gas could now enter the sewer system, which can cause a very dangerous situation.
Cross Bore Prevention with Accurate Mapping
To prevent cross bore related accidents, or even cross bores from occurring in the first place, underground assets such as gas lines should be properly located and marked before any work occurs. It of course relies on prior underground asset mapping that is accurate. Without a proper map of what’s underneath, you can mark where to safely dig and still end up making a cross bore.
Before marking where relevant utility lines are, there should be accurate mapping of the area for precisely knowing the location of all assets.
Prevention is everything when it comes to cross bores, and mapping is critical. Always make sure to have an accurate map of all underground assets on site. That way, you can safely get to work without the potential of cross boring haunting you.
